Members of our Gardening Ministry care for the various gardens around the church, Parish Center, and rectory. The Prayer Garden and Labyrinth outside the lower level entrance of the church is one of the Garden Ministry projects. This area is available to spend some time in quiet prayer or contemplation.

Labyrinths have historically been used for private meditation as well as group ritual. The labyrinth symbolizes a twisting path with one entrance (birth) and one destination (God). For those who could not afford to travel to holy sites and lands, the labyrinth came to be thought of as a symbolic form of pilgrimage where one can walk the path in prayer, ascending to salvation and enlightenment.

Labyrinths may also be used to achieve a contemplative state. Walking among the turns, ones loses track of direction and the outside world, thus quieting the mind.

Many of the plants and features in the Prayer Garden were chosen because of a Biblical reference. Tiles throughout the garden cite scripture passages which reference the corresponding plant or feature.

Some plants, such as the John Paul II Clematis, were chosen because of their connection to our Catholic faith heritage.

Still other features are of particular significance to our parish. The "black rock" in the Labyrinth is actually a chunk of coal from our sister parish in Santa Maria, Mexico, where coal mining is the chief source of income for families. These coal mines are dug by hand and very dangerous.

A few years ago, twelve miners lost their lives in a cave-in just a short time before a mission group from Our Lady of the Lake arrived in Santa Maria. The group brought back a piece of coal as a reminder of the lives these fellow Christians lead and of the love and generosity they showed our parishioners.

For more information on mission trips to our sister parish, see the Service & Outreach Ministries page of our website.

Beneath the arbor entry to the Prayer Garden are Memorial Pavers. Please pray for those named whenever you visit the Garden.

Additional pavers will be added as the gardens continue to be developed. For information on purchasing a paver, contact Joyce Arnold.
